My Predictions for 2026 Wedding Trends
From a British Columbia Wedding Photographer
Every year, weddings shift in subtle ways and I absolutely love watching new ideas come up (I mean fruit as decor, come on!!). After another busy season photographing weddings around the Fraser Valley, I have a few predictions for what we’ll be seeing more of in 2026. Spoiler: it’s less about perfection and more about presence.
1. Weather-Proof Mindsets
If there’s one thing BC weddings have taught me, it’s that the weather will do whatever it wants. Instead of fighting it, couples are embracing it and leaning into the moody skies, drizzling, and sometimes, pouring rain. Whether it’s cozy tents, indoor-outdoor spaces, or just dancing in the rain, I think 2026 couples will be more focused on capturing how it felt, rather than waiting for clear skies.
2. Documentary-Style Storytelling
We’re officially moving past stiff posing and curated Pinterest boards. Couples want galleries that feel honest and cinematic. Full of in-between moments, hugs that linger long, and laughter that takes over the frame. Candid, documentary-style photography will continue to take over, with more people valuing real connection over perfection. Which is EXACTLY what I like to see.
3. Intimate Gatherings That Feel Personal
I’m seeing more couples opt for smaller guest lists and bigger experiences. Backyard weddings, cabin weekends, and destination elopements are still huge but with more attention to design and atmosphere. Think cozy, intentional, and meaningful over extravagant. Every detail feels intentional.
4. Richer, Bolder Color Palettes
We’re saying goodbye to all-neutrals-everything. Expect deeper tones (forest green, rust, navy, and wine) paired with organic textures like linen, wood, stone and metal. More organic decor (like the fruit I mentioned above) and less staged decor. Couples are choosing colour that reflect mood and place, not just trends. BC’s natural scenery already gives you a stunning backdrop, so these palettes only make it pop more.
5. Unique Florals and Design Details
Floral design keeps getting more creative and “different.” Think asymmetrical arrangements, hanging installations, and sculptural shapes that make the ceremony space feel alive. Even with smaller weddings, couples are investing in statement pieces instead of quantity. It’s less of more “perfect bouquet” and more “art you get married under.”
6. “Non-Wedding” Vibes
One of my favourite shifts is how many couples are stepping away from traditional timelines or expectations. Maybe they skip the wedding party, read vows privately, or JOINING cocktail hour. It’s all about breaking rules that don’t serve them and it’s creating more relaxed, genuine experiences that photograph beautifully.
7. Focus on Guest Experience
From local wines and comfort food dinners to weekend-long celebrations, couples are caring more about how their people feel than what looks trendy. I’ve been noticing welcome gatherings, brunches, and laid-back after-parties becoming more and more of the norm.
Here are a quick list of “trendy” ideas if you are looking for something like that next year.
1. Bold Color Palettes
Deep rust, olive, navy, and plum mixed with neutral tones
Unexpected combos like terracotta + cobalt or sage + clay
2. Statement Florals
Hanging floral installations and asymmetrical arches
Greenery that is earthy (grasses, moss, bushes)
Florals that look wild but intentional
3. Modern Tablescapes
Mixed metals (cool silver + brushed gold)
Candles in layered heights and tones
Fruit incorporated into the tablescapes
Ceramic plates, linen napkins, and textured runners
4. Lighting as Decor
Warm café lights + overhead hanging bulbs
Candle clusters instead of big centerpieces
5. Minimal Ceremony Setups
Open-frame arches or floral clouds
Focus on the landscape instead of big structures
Florals that create the arch
6. Unique Guest Experiences
Cocktail carts or signature drink bars
Polaroid or audio guest books
Interactive food options (grazing tables, pasta bars, etc.)
7. Non-Traditional Seating + Layouts
Lounge areas with vintage furniture
Circular or half-moon ceremony seating
Family-style dinner tables
8. Fashion Forward Moments
Bridal capes, sleeves, or pops of color
Lace and corsets
Grooms in textured suits (linen, velvet, or pattern)
Fun reception outfit changes
9. Elevated Casual Food + Drink
Local ingredients, comfort foods, craft cocktails
Dessert tables or late-night snacks over formal cake
At the end of the day, I think 2026 weddings will be less about following trends and more about doing what feels right. The most memorable photos always come from couples who let go of expectations, trust their team, and stay present in the moment.
If you’re planning a 2026 wedding in BC, my best advice? Hire a planner and together, build a day that feels like you, and let the rest unfold naturally.
